  • Reverse osmosis wastewater is the biggest swing factor in the RO rows. The APEC ROES-50's own owner's manual states two different figures depending on how it is tested: a 25.4 percent recovery rating under lab conditions (about 2.9 gallons of wastewater per gallon of drinking water) and an 11.8 percent efficiency rating under conditions that approximate real daily use with the storage tank installed (about 7.5 gallons of wastewater per gallon of drinking water). The table above uses the real-use figure. The Waterdrop G3P600 is a tankless design and states a 2:1 pure-to-drain ratio, meaning about 0.5 gallons of wastewater per gallon produced, which is why its five-year total lands close to the tank-style system despite a higher equipment price.
  • Softener salt varies by water hardness, softener size, and regeneration frequency more than by brand. The capacity math: why a cheap pitcher is not always the cheap option

Every pitcher and faucet filter carries two limits printed on the box: a time interval and a rated gallon capacity. Manufacturers write the replacement rule as "whichever comes first," but most buyers only track the calendar date. Divide the rated gallons by the printed interval and a different number appears: how much water per day that filter actually assumes you will use.

A single adult using a pitcher lightly can go the full six months and stay under the rated capacity. A household of four drinking and cooking with the same pitcher at a combined gallon a day per person, a commonly used planning figure and not a measured average for any specific home, reaches the printed 120-gallon limit in about a month. Past that point, the cartridge is filtering water beyond the volume its certification was tested against, whether or not the calendar says it is still good.

Correcting the Brita Elite's replacement rate to the shorter of the two limits changes its five-year total from $235.89 to roughly $1,255, close to the $1,139.89 list-price total for the Aquasana Claryum 3-Stage, a system with a broader certified contaminant list and far higher flow.
